Alive in St. Augustine!

One of our earliest long-distance road trips was to St. Augustine, Florida. We arrived at our destination at dawn and raced barefoot down the beach to catch a glimpse of the sunrise, just to race as quickly back to the boardwalk, terrified of all the little crabs going about their usual morning business in the sand.

We pitched our tent at Anastasia State Park and noticed how friendly the squirrels were. I took my laptop down to the pavilion on the beach to get some work done, and thought, as I watched the ocean, that this was truly living the life.

Later that night we found ourselves back at the pavilion, but out of necessity to stay cool. Who knew that sleeping in a tent in Florida in an August rainstorm would be downright impossible? But the sight of the storm over the ocean was worth the lack of sleep, not to mention the ocean water temperature of 79 heavenly degrees. We also had to learn the hard way that the ocean takes whatever you let it, when the waves came and swallowed up our pink polaroid camera.

We absolutely loved visiting St. Augustine. It is a place that makes you feel alive in a very special way. We highly recommend touring the jail and strolling the town in the evening. We learned a lot, including the fact that the squirrels in Florida are very good at opening a box of crackers left unattended for less than ten minutes.

When the time came to leave, it felt all too soon. On top of all the great memories this trip gave us, this road trip didn’t break the bank or leave us in debt. Priceless memories can be affordable for all income brackets, and through Variety Tours we are determined to help you plan a great trip within your means!
